ERC and associates will conduct a study to assess the extent and improve the management of End-of-Life (EOL) and Abandoned, Lost, and Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) generated by the tuna fishery in three specific Pacific Island Countries (Solomon Islands, the Marshall Islands and either Kiribati or Fiji.)

The key objectives of the work are:

To devise a methodology for data collection and a predictive model for current and future end-of-life (EOL) and abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) production and distribution across the region.

  •  Create scenarios, using the model, to project changes in production, magnitude, fate, deposition, accumulation, hotspot distribution, material types, and quantities for the case study countries, extrapolating to other PICs.
  •  Identify policies and infrastructure required for effective ALDFG and EOL management in the PICs.
