Professor Gallagher designed and delivers the Lloyds Maritime Academy Certificate in Maritime Environmental Management.  As global attention focuses on reducing the effects of human activity on the environment, special attention is being paid to the world’s oceans and waterways. Effectively managing the environmental impact of maritime operations is not only expected by regulators, but increasingly demanded by consumers. In this time of huge uncertainty, both from climate change and the recent pandemic, organisations across the maritime sector are understanding the benefits of reducing risks to the environment, as well as the need for effective and measurable environmental management planning and practice.

This distance learning course operates annually and provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles underpinning maritime environmental management, examining the numerous environmental impacts associated with maritime operations. It explores the concepts of risk and precaution and offers a thorough and up to date account of the many laws, codes and regulations governing the maritime environment.  It examines the associated issues of compliance and enforcement, so crucial to maritime organisations; presents various planning tools and systems, central to the maritime environmental management; and demonstrates how the effectiveness of these systems can be measured, and their economic impact determined.

In addition, ERC also design and provide specialist bespoke courses tailored to the needs of companies and organisations with previous clients including the Ministry of Defence.
