Duncan has accrued over 8 years’ experience in a range of roles within the environment and development sectors, including on multiple projects focused on marine and coastal planning, pollution and management. With a first-class BSc (Hons) in Coastal Conservation and MSc in International Development from the University of Edinburgh, he has strong research skills and significant expertise in data collection and analytical methods, which he is adept at utilising to develop evidence-based guidance and recommendations to inform policy and practice.

Duncan has produced an evaluation and intelligence report of the key marine plastics research & innovation (R&I) activities in India as part of the Commonwealth Marine Plastics Research and Innovation Framework (CMPRIF). Whilst working in Kathmandu, Duncan also conducted a critical review of the legal, policy and institutional frameworks influencing water management and development in Nepal as part of the Asian Development Bank’s Bagmati River Basin Improvement Project.

Duncan has strong quantitative skills, which he has utilised to develop a Material Flow Analysis (MFA) to track the flow of plastic fishing gear within the Sri Lankan fisheries sector and construct a model to estimate the volume of seafood waste generated across the UK seafood value chain. He has also assessed the status of Gaza’s coastal zone and the challenges and opportunities for ICZM for the World Bank Group and delivered a feasibility study for the delivery of a baseline assessment of ALDFG in the Maldives for Cefas.

Duncan’s work on a range of global projects, including extended periods living and working in South Asia, has enabled him to acquire a working knowledge of Hindi, to complement his existing French language skills.

Having spent a period teaching at primary and secondary level, including a period as a Head of Geography in an inner London high school, Duncan is also knowledgeable about the UK education system and environmental education. This, coupled with his expertise in stakeholder engagement, enabled Duncan to design and deliver a mixed-methods strategy to engage teachers and schools in research to develop evidence to enhance the delivery of the Educational Access option, as part of a contract for Natural England
